Which brand of washer and dryer would a professional repairman recommend?

The question I am most often asked is “Which brand or washer and dryer would you recommend?”. My answer often surprises people because it is one of the most affordable brands on the market.

Before I answer that, let’s deal with a false assumption that the big manufacturers have instilled in their clients. Which is, that because you pay more for an appliance it is going to last longer. This is absolutely wrong, in fact, in my opinion and experience, the reverse is true.

Here is the logic behind that statement. When you engineer anything, every part used on it is a possible point of failure. If you have only 20 parts on a washer, you only have 20 possible parts to diagnose and only 20 places it can possibly go bad.

If you have 350 parts on a washer, now you have 350 parts to diagnose and 350 places it can possibly go bad. Furthermore, if a technician has to repair this machine, the first one can be done in a reasonable and affordable amount of time.

The machine with 350 parts will take a crazy amount of time to diagnose and this is an expense that is usually passed on to the client. Furthermore, the appliances with the greatest amount of bells and whistles on them, which are usually the most expensive, are the ones that break down the soonest. They are also the most expensive to repair, if they can be repaired at all.

For example, I was recently called out to Wild Dunes on the Isle Of Palms to look at a really expensive SubZero refrigerator which was only 4 years old. It was really a nice unit, it’s doors were customized so that it matched the cabinets in the kitchen. The client told me he had spent well over 5 grand on the unit. It was gorgeous.

So you can imagine the look on his face when I had to tell him that the computer board had gone bad on the unit and that SubZero no longer manufactured the board so there was no way I could get a replacement for it. I should also not that if a manufacturer does not support an appliance any longer there is no way a field tech can do so.

I explained to him that I had often run into this situation, that my clients in several of them had got me to pull the board so it could be sent off to be repaired by a third party vendor. The last gentleman I had done this for spent 400 bucks to have the board rebuilt and when it came back, IT STILL DIDN’T WORK!

Needless to say I was frustrated, but nowhere near as much as the client was!

Whether you’re a homeowner or a property manager, if you’re looking for a washer dryer set that won’t cost a fortune and will deliver years of service, try the Roper brand out. Check out the video above for more details on brand. Also, don’t think that because you probably haven’t heard of it, it’s no good.

This is actually Whirlpool / Kenmore’s lower end brand, but the engineering in these units has been around for decades now and is one of the most reliable brands on the market in my opinion.

If you’ve got a Roper and you’d like someone who has plenty of experience in repairing them, please give us a call at 843 568 5936.

Free-Standing vs Enclosed Refrigerator Installation.

I’m about to have to tell a client that the reason their beautiful Samsung refrigerator is no longer keeping things as cold as it should is in part due to the fact that they chose the wrong refrigerator for their particular kitchen cabinet setup.

To explain, all refrigerators have to have some sort of mechanism to blow air across the coils to remove the heat it extracts from the interior of your refrigerator. Some are designed to do this from the front. Generally, these are the best models for an enclosed installation.

What does that mean? An enclosed installation is one in which the cabinetry surrounds, wraps and literally, encloses the unit. This means that there is very little air flow to the back of the refrigerator. This is fine as long as the refrigerator was designed to function that way.

This problem is, as I’m looking at right now, some refrigerators rely on air moving through and across the back of the machine. To put this kind of a machine in an enclosed installation will cause it to have a short life because the compressor will have to run a lot more to do it’s job. This will cause it to go bad prematurely.

So be sure to check when you’re purchasing a new refrigerator whether it’s meant to be free standing or enclosed. In most cases, you will find a warning on the sticker that contains your model and serial number.

Oven is locked, Thanksgiving is coming!

Samsung Oven Locked Close

Samsung Oven Locked Close

This is one I always get in the weeks before Thanksgiving. A client is excited about the Holidays and planning their meals and getting their kitchens in order and part of that is cleaning the oven.

And usually everything is okay but then sometimes when they go into self cleaning mode the door won’t unlock when it ends.

Which is where we find today’s client, an old customer of mine. Her Samsung is locked and she can’t get in. Lucky for her it is a problem I see all the time and can usually take care of in one call, like today.

In 45 minutes time I have her oven open and her kitchen back in business. If you’re having the same issues, I’ll be glad to help you out as well. 843 568 5936

Check Your Husbands Pockets

Whirlpool Stack Washer Not Draining

Whirlpool Stack Washer Not Draining

This particular client was in panic mode when I got her call. She rents out a condo on Wild Dunes Resort and one of her best clients was coming in the morning for a 10 day stay.

Unfortunately, her Whirlpool stack washer dryer combo was having a huge issue, the washer was not draining completely and the finished laundry was sopping wet! This kind of issue can stress anyone out, however this client was particularly high strung and I could tell it was really taking it’s toll on her.

Upon diagnosis I discovered that the drain pump had been completely stopped up by a plastic bag. She immediately identified it as one of the dog’s poop bags, (luckily an unused one) that her husband had left in his pocket when he did a load of laundry.

After removal, I was able to get the machine back online and working properly and alleviate her anxiety over the situation. She swore she would always make him check his pockets from now on. I wished her good luck, I can change mechanical behavior in most cases, but human behavior is beyond me!

If you’re having similar problems and anxieties, please give me a call, I’ll be glad to help

Don’t Pour Grease Into Your Garbage Disposal

Dishwasher Not Draining

Dishwasher Not Draining

I get a call in the morning from a lady who is upset! She had been cooking a roast the night before and needed to pour off some of the fat from the pan and had decided to pour it in her garbage disposal.

She soon discovered that this is not the best place to dispose of grease because after dinner she loaded up the dishwasher and it woudln’t work.

Because she had called before 12 I was able to get her on the schedule for that day, I can do that most of the time, sometimes I am too busy to do so.

When I got there, I discovered that the grease had run down the drain hole for the dishwasher (most dishwashers drain through the garbage disposal). What had caused the problem was that when it cooled, the liquid had turned solid for about a foot.

The drain pump in the dishwasher simply didn’t have enough power to push this big of a clog back into the garbage disposal.

Without going into the boring particulars about how I cleared the drain, I was able to clear that same afternoon and get her life back to normal. I love being able to do that.

Even better she called one of my clients who had referred her to me and told her that “I really knew my stuff” and that I was very good at what I do. That pleased me even more because I like making people who refer me look good.

If you have an issue you need help with, please give me a call, I’ll do my best to make you as happy as these two clients were!

Bathroom Upgrade In Downtown Charleston South Carolina

Bathroom Before

Bathroom Before

Most of my work these days is purely functional, yet sometimes I still do small remodel, handyman and home improvement projects. I figure, I’m there, I have the tools; why not help my clients out with as many of their needs as possible.

I learned appliance repair in my Father’s laundromat business. At 11 I was taught how to make electrical cords by fabricating the plugs and then attaching them to Wascomat commercial washers, I can remember doing a hundred at a time. By the time I was 17 and driving, I was doing maintenance on 8 laundromats all over Charleston.

As young men do, I left that trade and wandered through many others, the one relevant to this article was high end trim carpentry and historic renovations. One of the highlights of this era to me was getting to rebuild the kitchen in the Calhoun Mansion.

However, as the years went by and it became harder on my body to move and set up all the construction equipment required to perform this work. So in 2012 I went back into Appliance Repair and here I am.

Bathroom After

Bathroom After

Still, I like to still keep my skills sharp by doing occasional home repairs. The latest is a bathroom upgrade for a client who has used my services for several years. He would have done it himself, he told me, except that he had pinched a nerve in his back and was not up to it.

So over the course of the next two afternoons I pulled out his old damaged toilet then replaced both the toilet and added a new pedestal sink where the old had been. When finished it felt really good to have done something that made a room not only more livable, but also prettier.

So if you’re in need of home repairs or improvements, give me a call, I’ll be glad to help.

LG Refrigerator with a busted water line in Mount Pleasant SC.

LG Refrigerator Repair in Mount Pleasant sC

LG Refrigerator Repair in Mount Pleasant sC

This repair is a pleasant surprise, that is, if you can actually get excited over a repair being mechanical in nature instead of computer related. As you can gather, most of the the time when I go to look at an LG or Samsung refrigerator the repair has something to do with computer systems which are often a nightmare to fix.

Mechanical repairs on the other hand are usually much easier to diagnose and repair. This one has a leaking water hose on the back. The line which feeds the water filter which in turn feeds both the water dispenser and the icemaker.

Luckily I was able to get this part the same day and get the leak fixed so my client could go back to using the unit in the manner they were accustomed to.

So if you’re having an issue with your Samsung or LG refrigerator, please call us at 843 568 5936 today! You’ll be glad you did!

Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Washing James Island

Whirlpool Dishwasher with bad control board.

Whirlpool Dishwasher with bad control board.

It’s the kind of issue I run into most often these days, the kind of thing I hate to have to tell a client, the control board on their appliance is shot.

Back in the 80’s and the 90’s you seldom if ever had to tell people this because the appliances of that era had very few computer boards and the few that had were robust. They were built to last, nowadays all appliances are engineered to fail within 5 to 6 years. To me, this is a shame.

I’m looking at a prime example of this today, even though the whirlpool dishwasher I’m looking at is only 4 years old, the control board has already failed. The relay that sends power to the motor has burned out and since it is embedded in the control board, we have no choice to replace the board to do the repair.

Fortunately, it is something I can normally do on the same day and get your dishwasher back running again if you choose to repair instead of replacing. Call 843 568 5936 if you have a similar problem and need some help.

Water Dispensing Slowly and No Ice Refrigerator Repair Park West

Frigidaire Gallery Repair Park West

Frigidaire Gallery Repair Park West

Sometimes the things an appliance repairman runs into are complex, sometimes they are quite simple. So simple that the client could have fixed it themselves if they had taken the time to investigate it. Most of the time when I run into repairs like that it’s because the client has to much to do and too little time to do it in.

Right now I’m looking at a Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator that is only slowly dispensing water and not making ice at all. The owners have just moved into the house and do not have manuals and aren’t familiar with the machine at all. Normally when you have this set of issues the problem is that either the water filter is old and clogged or that the filter is not making proper contact with the filter head (the device the filter plugs into).

Frigidaire-Water-Filter-HeadIn this particular case all I had to do was to replace the filter and the machine went back to operating properly. It’s nice to be able to get something fixed the same day, for me and for the client! If you’re experiencing similar problems, please give us a call at 843 568 5936 and we’ll get your problem solved!

GE Dryer Repair Mt Pleasant SC

GE Dryer

GE Dryer with a broken drive belt

I have decided to start keeping an online journal of my repairs. Today’s blog is about a GE Dryer located in Park West in Mt Pleasant. The owner’s daughter actually initiated the repair since the owner doesn’t, in her words, speak English very well. I on the other hand don’t speak Spanish very well.. in poquito to say the least.

I was happy to find that the dryer issue was a mechanical one instead of a computer failure. Mechanical failures by their very nature are much easier to diagnose and fix than computer issues. Mechanical problems are engineered to be fixable, Computer problems are engineered to be the exact opposite.

In this case the drive belt for the dryer had broken and I was able to get it back online the same day at a reasonable price. Also, this repair comes with a 90 day warranty, which the client is very happy about.

If you have appliance problems and need your GE Dryer repaired in the greater Charleston SC area, please give us a call at 843 568 5936! You’ll be glad you did!
